Children’s helmets – safety from the start

Children need special protection - that's why we develop our children's bike helmets with extra features. The size range of 44 cm (XS) -58 cm (M) covers all ages, from balance bike beginners to teenagers. Colorful designs with cool motifs ensure that kids enjoy wearing their helmets. Reflectors and optional LED lights further increase visibility in traffic.

Our most popular children's helmet for your little ones:

  • Meggy: The classic with 360° reflectors, LED rear light & numerous designs

MIPS-Helmets for maximum protection

The MipsTechnology (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is the game-changer when it comes to safety. In the event of an oblique impact, the inner helmet shell can shift minimally, thus reducing dangerous rotational forces. Studies show: Mips-Helmets can reduce rotational acceleration by 22%.

Expert tip: MIPS It is particularly worthwhile for mountain bikers and e-bike riders, as the risk of oblique impacts is higher.

E-bike & Pedelec helmets

With e-bikes you can easily reach 25 km/h and more - this requires special protection. Our Pedelec helmets meet the stricter requirements NTA 8776 standard for speed pedelecs and provide extended head coverage at the temples and back of the head. The additional padding and reinforced helmet shells are optimally tailored to the higher speeds.

Top features of our E-bike helmets:

• Extended protection zone at the back of the head
• Integrated LED taillights
• Compatible with bike computers
• Extra ventilation to prevent overheating

Finding the right bicycle helmet size – Here’s how

The best helmet is of no use if it doesn't fit properly. Current tests show: There is massive differences in the protective effect – but not between expensive and cheap helmets, but between well-fitting and poorly fitting ones. That's why choosing the right size is crucial.

How to find your perfect helmet size in 3 steps:

Step 1: Measure head circumference: Take a flexible tape measure and place it about 2 finger widths above your eyebrows. Bring it around your head over your ears - where your head has the largest circumference.

Step 2: Choose the right size: Depending on the helmet, there are different sizes. Find your favorite helmet and see which size matches your measured head circumference.

Step 3: Fine tuning with the adjustment system Our helmets have the IAS system (Individual Adapting System) with an adjustment wheel. This allows you to adjust the helmet to your head with millimeter precision. The chin strap should be tight but not restrictive - a finger should fit between the strap and the chin.

Expert tip: Between two sizes? Take the larger one and use the adjustment system. A helmet that is too tight will cause headaches, while a helmet that is too wide will not provide optimal protection.

Bicycle helmet technologies and safety standards

Modern bicycle helmets are high-tech products. At KED we rely on the tried and tested In-Mold-Process in which outer shell and EPS-Core to be welded under heat and pressure. The result: extremely stable but feather-light helmets with optimal force distribution in the event of an impact.

Our core technologies at a glance:

In-Mold-Construction: The outer shell and foam core are manufactured in one piece - this makes the helmet light and stable at the same time.

Ventilation systems: Up to 24 strategically placed air channels ensure optimal aerodynamics and cooling. Particularly important when driving sportily!

Safety certifications: All KED helmets meet the EN 1078 standard, our e-bike helmets also meet the stricter NTA 8776. This means: tested safety according to European standards.

Test winner quality: Regular top rankings at ADAC and Stiftung Warentest confirm our quality. The Meggy has already been awarded several times as the best children's helmet.

Frightening, but unfortunately true: just about 10% of German cyclists currently wear a helmet. The numbers clearly show the benefits - be smarter than the majority!

Helmet care and when a new bicycle helmet is necessary

A bicycle helmet is not a product that lasts forever - but with the right care it will last a long time. The EPS-Foam inside ages due to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. You should replace your helmet after 3-5 years, even if it still looks good on the outside.

When you need a new helmet immediately:

  • After every fall – even if no damage is visible
  • If there are visible cracks in the shell or foam
  • If the adjustment system no longer works
  • For faded or brittle straps

You can find more information and tips on changing your helmet here

Care tips for long durability:

  • Clean only with mild soapy water - no solvents!
  • Wash upholstery regularly (usually removable)
  • Do not leave your helmet in the car (heat damages the material)
  • Store in a dry and dark place
  • Use transport bag

Is there a compulsory helmet in Germany?

No, there is no legal helmet for cyclists in Germany. The StVO does not prescribe a helmet. But: In the event of an accident, a lack of helmet support can be seen as a fault and influence your insurance cover. Regardless of the legal situation, we strongly recommend always wearing a helmet. The numbers speak for themselves: helmet carriers have a significantly lower risk of injury.

How do I find the right bicycle helmet size?

Miss your head circumference about 2 finger width over the eyebrows with a measuring tape. This value in centimeters corresponds to your helmet size. Our size table then shows you the right model. With the integrated adjustment system you can perfect the adjustment.

What is the difference between city, MTB and racing bike helmets?

City helmets are comfortable, well ventilated and often equipped with practical features such as visor or light. Mountain bike helmets offer more protection on the back of the head and often have a visor against branches and sun. Racing bike helmets are particularly light and aerodynamically optimized for high speeds. The choice depends on your driving style - our filters will help you find the right helmet type.

Where are KED bicycle helmets made?

KED is one of the last helmet manufacturers to produce most of the helmets in Germany. Our production site in Freiberg am Neckar stands for German engineering and highest quality standards. This local production enables short distances, strict quality controls and sustainable production.

How can I save when buying a bicycle helmet?

Register for our newsletter and secure a 10% discount on your first order! You will also find regular discounts in our sale area with up to 60% savings. Tip: Helmet sets with suitable accessories are often cheaper than individual purchases. Also pay attention to our seasonal actions-especially in autumn there are top deals!

How often do I have to exchange my bike helmet?

Even without visible damage, you should replace your helmet after 3-5 years. The EPS-Foam core ages by UV radiation, temperature fluctuations and sweat-the material loses its protective effect over time. After each fall, an immediate exchange is mandatory, even if no cracks are visible. The structure can still be damaged and no longer protects you reliably in the next impact. Our tip: write down the purchase date inside in the helmet!

What means MIPS And do I really need that?

MIPS stands for multi-directional impact protection system-an additional layer in the helmet, which can reduce the rotary forces to your brain by up to 47% when it blows up. In most bicycle accidents, the impact is not exactly, but weird. MIPS It is particularly worthwhile for mountain bikers, e-bike drivers and everyone who is often on the road. The investment in this technology costs a little more, but can make the difference.

Can I continue to use a bicycle helmet after a fall?

No, definitely not! Even if no damage is visible on the outside, microrises in the EPS-Foam. The helmet is then like an airbag after triggering - it fulfilled its task and lost its protective effect. In a second impact, he would no longer protect you reliably. Therefore: a helmet, a fall. Exchange it immediately - your security is priceless!

Are more expensive bicycle helmets automatically safer?

Not necessarily! Studies show: The price says nothing about security. All of our helmets meet the same safety standards-whether an entry-level model or premium helmet. The price difference lies in additional features such as MIPS-Technology, better ventilation, lighter materials or more complex designs. The perfect fit is crucial! A well -fitting cheap helmet protects better than an expensive one that wobbles.

How do I clean and maintain my bicycle helmet correctly?

Less is more! Clean your helmet only with lukewarm water and mild soap - aggressive cleaners or solvents can attack the material. The interior cushions are mostly removable and can be washed by hand wash. Let the helmet dry in the air, never on the heating or in the blazing sun. Stand it dark and dry, ideally in a transport bag. Avoid extreme temperatures - so don't leave the helmet in the hot car. With the right care, your KED helmet lasts the full 3-5 years!
