Children's helmets by age: From babies to teenagers

The right size is crucial for optimal protection. Our helmets are precisely tailored to the respective growth phases. Depending on the model, different sizes are recommended, the numbers may vary a little, but you can remember the following information as a rough guide.

• Baby helmets: From a head circumference of 44 cm, extra light and with reinforced back of the head protection
• Kindergarten age: 47-51 cm, colorful designs and initial independence
• school children: 52-56 cm, more ventilation for longer tours
• Youth helmets: 54-61 cm, adult look with youthful style

Expert tip: Re-measure your child's head circumference every 6 months - children grow faster than you think, and a helmet that is too small does not provide sufficient protection.

The big children's helmet buying guide

Choosing the right children's helmet can be overwhelming - with so many on the market, different technologies and sizing systems. The decision is actually easy if you know the most important criteria. 

Since 1998, everyone sold in Germany has to do so Helmets meet the CE EN 1078 standard fulfill. This guarantees minimum standards for shock absorption. KED goes beyond that: Additional TÜV tests and the GS mark confirm the safety of our children's bicycle helmets.

This is how you find the right size for your children's helmet

Size is the most important factor – too big Helmet slips, one that is too small presses and does not provide sufficient protection:

Step 1: Measure head circumference
Place the tape measure 1 cm above your eyebrows and run it horizontally around your head. Measure at the widest point above the ears.

Step 2: Understand size chart
It is important to understand that the different sizes may vary a little depending on the model. 

Step 3: Take growth into account
Kids grow quickly and so do their heads! For limit values, choose the larger size - the adjustment system compensates for 4-5 cm.

Expert tip: The children's helmet fits correctly when exactly two fingers fit between the edge of the helmet and the eyebrows.

Safety first: certificates and standards

Not all protection is the same - understand what the seals of approval mean:

CE EN 1078 – the basic standard:
• Shock absorption at a defined fall height
• Penetration protection – the shell can withstand sharp edges
• Belt strength
• Field of view requirements

TÜV & GS mark – additional security:
• Independent testing in Germany
• Testing of materials for harmful substances
• Long-term testing of components

MIPS-Technology – the rotation protection:
Can reduce rotational forces by up to 47% and significantly reduce the risk of brain injuries. Particularly important since most falls occur at an angle.

Adjust the helmet correctly: the perfect fit

A helmet for children only protects when adjusted correctly.

1. Check horizontal alignment
• Children's bicycle helmet sits horizontally
• Front and rear edges at the same height
• Forehead is covered
• View remains clear

2. Adjust the Y position of the belts
• Strap triangle encloses the ears without touching them
• Closure is below the ear

3. Tighten the chin strap correctly
• A maximum of two fingers fit between the chin and the strap
• Helmet must not slip when shaking your head

4. The shake test Shake your head vigorously – the helmet stays firmly but does not pinch. If it slips, check the size and setting!

Expert tip: Practice dressing and undressing with your child – they only enjoy doing what they can do themselves.
