Repair instead of throwing away!
"Repair things" - which was still a matter of course for our grandparents, it is not without reason that a trend is developing again, because repairs are particularly sustainable. In times of climate change and increasing consciousness for costs and resources, repairs help extend the life cycle of products and avoid waste.
We have always offered a wide range of spare parts for our KED helmets (straps, visors, upholstery, reflectors, etc.) long before the trend for repair cafes and DIY instructions. Because as a responsible manufacturer of bicycle helmets, we would like to help protect and maintain the planet for future generations. We try to reduce our footprint and optimize our processes.
Many factors play a role in the production of bicycle helmets. To a large extent, our helmets consist of technical plastics and are developed to offer the highest possible protection. A helmet must also be as light and comfortable as possible and defy wind and weather in daily use - of course without losing its protective effect. This high resistance also has a downside, because you can't just throw a helmet on the compost if you no longer need it. The recycling of disused helmets is of course useful, but in turn consumes energy. Therefore, we want our helmets to be used in the sense of sustainability overall recommended useful life of up to five years. This is what we achieve on the one hand through the particularly high product quality of our helmets, which is largely produced in Germany and on the other hand through the systematic promotion of repairability and the production and promotion of spare parts.
The advantages of repairs are obvious:
- Reduction of the waste quantity: Repairs are immense to avoid and thus also relieve the recycling industry.
- Protecting resources: Repairing products (instead of new purchase) protects resources because fewer new products have to be manufactured.
- Extension of the lifespan: A repair is extended by the life cycle of a product, which has a direct impact on sustainability.
- Reduction of CO2 emissions: The production of new bicycle helmets requires energy and of course also contributes to emissions.
The repair of bicycle helmets is therefore an important aspect of sustainability. With smaller defects, many people decide to simply throw away the helmet and buy a new one. However, this leads to an unnecessary waste of resources and unnecessarily enlarges the Müllberg. Instead, smaller repairs should be carried out - if possible - to extend the lifespan. Of course, only original spare parts should be used for repairs and no "structural changes" may be made, otherwise the approval of the helmet will be lost.
One thing is clear: if a helmet has been exposed to an impact, it should definitely be replaced. Because in terms of security, no compromises should be made with a bicycle helmet.
But the whole helmet is not always broken. For example, if you are only defective, then it is easy to remedy. If only one little thing has to be replaced, then our range of spare parts is the first address. In more complicated cases you can also contact the KED service team, because we know our products inside and by heart and are happy to help.
Many parts of a bicycle helmet can be repaired without hesitation. Here are some examples:
- Visor/visor: If the sign or the visor has been damaged or lost, it can simply be replaced
- Interior cushion: worn or broken interior cushion can usually be replaced by fresh upholstery.
- Light: We have many spare parts for the security lights of our helmets in the warehouse.
- Shell: If the foam core or the outer skin appears damaged, the helmet, on the other hand, should not be repaired, because only a perfect shell ensures an effective absorption of bumps. In this case you should look around for a new helmet.
Of course, the topic of sustainability does not end when it comes to repairs.
Bicycle helmets are an important part of safety in road traffic. They protect the head from injuries in the event of accidents and are therefore indispensable. In Germany there are strict regulations and regulations that guarantee the safety of bicycle helmets. But today not only security is important, but also sustainability. More and more people pay attention to the origin and environmental compatibility of the products they buy when shopping.
The helmets of the KED brand are developed in Germany and mostly manufactured. The high level of production depth at the company location enables us to have a responsible production that offers many advantages. The paths to the end product are kept short, the local economy is supported and the environment is spared. In addition, the high production standards in Germany guarantee that our bicycle helmets are not only safe and reliable, but are also made much more environmentally friendly than in productions in other parts of the world.
We believe that every little positive change counts and we are not least convinced that we have to protect smart heads in order to be able to create a better future for everyone.
