Kids' helmets from KED: bike helmets for children aged 1 to 14, from a toddler on a balance bike to the ride to school. Measure the head circumference, compare it with the model size and then choose the features. Age is only a rough guide. LED rear light, reflectors, visor, insect net and Mips depend on the model.

A kids' bike helmet starts with the measured head circumference and a secure fit without pressure points. The age range of 1 to 14 years only gives you a first guide. What matters are head size, model size and fit.

Kids' helmets at a glance

  • Measure the head circumference just above the eyebrows, at the widest point.
  • Compare the measurement with the current size range of each model.
  • Always check the fit on the head itself, not only by age.
  • Then choose features and riding type to match your everyday riding.
  • The product cards show the current range, sizes and availability.

Here you will find KED kids' bike helmets for the balance bike, the ride to school, everyday trips and tours. When you choose, what counts is the measured head circumference and a secure fit without pressure points. LED, reflectors and Mips depend on the model.

Choosing a kids' bike helmet: head circumference and fit first

A kids' helmet should be comfortable to wear and sit securely. So before you choose, measure the head with a soft tape measure just above the eyebrows, at the widest point. The KED size guide helps you make sense of the measurement.

How to measure head circumference

Place a flexible tape measure horizontally around the widest part of the head, about two finger widths above the eyebrows. Note the value in centimetres and compare it with the size range on the product card. Children's heads grow at different rates, so age is not a reliable guide to size. If the value sits at the edge of a range, how the helmet fits matters most.

Model Sizes by head circumference
Meggy II Trend 44–49, 46–51, 49–53 and 52–58 cm
Meggy Spark 45–50 and 50–55 cm
POP II 48–52 and 52–56 cm
Dyno 48–52 and 52–57 cm
Kailu 49–53 and 53–59 cm
Street Jr. Pro 49–55 and 53–58 cm
Embrace Jr 52–56 cm
5Forty 54–58 and 57–62 cm

Size ranges differ from model to model. The product cards show the current range and help you match your measurement to the helmet you want.

How a kids' helmet should fit

Put the helmet on centred and level. It should sit snugly without pinching or leaving pressure marks. Adjust the straps so they lie close when closed and the helmet stays stable when your child moves their head. An adjustment system can help with the fit, but it does not replace the right size or careful adjustment.

A quick everyday check is worth doing when you try it on: Can your child move their head freely? Does the helmet stay in place when they lean forward? Is it free of pressure on the forehead, temples and back of the head? If the helmet only feels comfortable with the straps loosened a lot, or it slips before the ride even starts, the size or adjustment is not right yet.

Measured the head circumference?

With the KED size guide you can compare your measurement with the size ranges of the models.

Bike helmets for toddlers, school children and teenagers

Many parents look for a helmet for a child aged 1, 2 or 3. There is no fixed size for each age. Two children of the same age often need different sizes. The following groups still help you get started.

Toddlers and first rides on the balance bike

The smallest KED kids' helmets start at 44 cm head circumference. The Meggy II Trend fits 44 to 49 cm in size XS, and the Meggy Spark fits 45 to 50 cm in size S. For very young children, it is also worth looking at the baby bike helmets. Our guide Bike helmet for babies and children: from what age? explains when a first helmet makes sense.

Nursery and primary school

Once the head grows past 48 cm, more models come into question. POP II and Dyno start at 48 cm, and the larger Meggy sizes go up to 58 cm. That often gives you several suitable helmets for the ride to school, so you can choose by features and design.

Older children and teenagers

For larger heads there are kids' helmets up to 62 cm. Street Jr. Pro and Kailu go up to 58 and 59 cm. The 5Forty covers 54 to 62 cm, so it often fits teenagers too. If the head circumference is already in the adult range, you will find more models under all bike helmets.

Girl or boy: the size depends only on head circumference. There are designs and colours for every taste, for example in our range of girls' bike helmets.

Which kids' bike helmet suits your everyday riding?

After size and fit comes the type of riding. Short trips on the balance bike have different practical needs from the daily ride to school or rides off-road. The model information shows which features may suit your everyday riding.

For the balance bike and first attempts

On the first rides, a comfortable, stable fit counts most. Measure the head circumference, take your time adjusting the helmet and check that it stays level.

For the ride to school and daily trips

For everyday use, easy adjustment and a comfortable fit are practical. Depending on the model, an LED rear light or reflectors can be extra features. Not every helmet has them. So check which details are currently listed for the model you want.

For sporty riding in town and off-road

For sportier rides, a visor can be useful depending on the model and riding style. Here too, check size and fit first, then compare the features of the specific helmet.

Compare features: what varies between kids' helmets?

Kids' helmets often look alike at first glance, but they differ in the details. Choose the right size first. Then you can compare the features that are useful in your everyday riding. Not every model has Mips, a light, reflectors, a visor, an insect net or the same kind of size adjustment.

LED rear light and reflectors

On some models, an LED rear light or reflectors can be an extra detail for daily trips. For the Meggy Spark, the current product page lists reflectors. For the POP II, an LED rear light and a reflector are listed. What counts is the current equipment of the specific model.

Mips, visor and insect net

Mips is only available on selected models. The POP II, for example, lists a Mips safety system. Mips does not replace the right size or a correctly adjusted helmet.

A visor can be handy for some rides, but it is not part of every kids' helmet either. The Embrace Jr lists a fixed integrated visor. The Meggy Spark lists an insect net. Compare these features based on how you actually ride.

Adjustment system and comfort

An adjustment system helps you fit the helmet to the head. The Meggy Spark lists the KED Neo adjustment system with a 360° head ring. The Embrace Jr lists an infinitely variable adjustment system with a dial. What counts most is how it feels when you try it on: the helmet must not wobble or press.

Meggy Spark: an award-winning model

In the Meggy collection you will find the Meggy Spark, currently listed in 45–50 and 50–55 cm. It won the Design & Innovation Award 2026. Its product details list reflectors, an insect net and the KED Neo adjustment system with a 360° head ring. Even with an award-winning model, the individual check of size and fit decides in the end.

Check, care for and replace in good time

Check the fit, the straps and any visible damage regularly. If the helmet sits differently or feels tighter, measure the head circumference again and check the fit. For KED helmets: after a crash or a hard impact, the helmet must be replaced, even if no damage is visible on the outside. You will find tips on care and replacement in the KED guide to replacing your helmet.

Compare kids' helmets by size and riding type

Find the right models

The KED size guide helps you make sense of the measured head circumference. For very young children, you can also compare the baby bike helmets.

When does a child need a bike helmet?

As soon as a child rides their own bike or balance bike, a well-fitting kids' bike helmet should be part of the kit. For child seats and trailers, also follow the manufacturer's guidance on seating position and available space. Age is one factor. The right size matters most.

What helmet size does a child need at 1, 2 or 3 years?

That depends on head circumference. There is no fixed size for each age. The smallest KED kids' helmets start at 44 cm: the Meggy II Trend fits 44 to 49 cm in size XS, and the Meggy Spark fits 45 to 50 cm in size S. Measure your child's head and choose the size that includes your measurement.

How do I find the right size for a kids' bike helmet?

Measure the head circumference at the widest point of the head, about two finger widths above the eyebrows. Compare the measurement with the model's size range. The kids' bike helmet should sit centred, snug and without pressure, and it should not shift when the strap is closed.

What should I look for in a kids' bike helmet?

Look for a stable fit without pressure points, easy size adjustment and features that suit your child's everyday riding. Rear light, reflectors and insect net depend on the model. The product details show what each KED kids' helmet offers.

Do all KED kids' bike helmets have a rear light or Mips?

No. A rear light, Mips and other features only come with the models marked accordingly. Mips can reduce rotational motion in certain angled impacts. It does not replace the right size and a correct fit.

Are there kids' helmets for teenagers with a large head?

Yes. Several KED kids' helmets reach into adult sizes. Street Jr. Pro fits up to 58 cm, Kailu up to 59 cm and the 5Forty up to 62 cm head circumference. If the head is even larger, you will find more models under all bike helmets.

Can a kids' helmet be worn with a hat?

A thick hat can change how the helmet sits and where it sits. If your child needs extra warmth, keep it thin, and make sure the helmet still sits centred and snug without pressure points. Check the fit every time the headwear changes.

Can the same kids' helmet be used for a balance bike, bike and scooter?

A well-fitting kids' bike helmet can suit different riding activities if the manufacturer does not restrict its use. Check the product information, check the fit before every ride and follow the rules for each vehicle.

How do I care for a kids' bike helmet?

Clean the shell, straps and pads following the model's care instructions. Lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth usually do the job. Avoid harsh cleaners, solvents and high heat.

What should I do with a kids' bike helmet after a crash?

If the helmet took an impact in a crash, stop using it. Damage to the material structure is not always visible. Also follow the instructions in the user manual.
