Bike helmet size: how to measure and find the right fit

To find the right helmet size, you need your head circumference in centimetres. Here we show you how to measure correctly and how to compare the result with the size of the helmet you want. After that, you check whether the helmet fits well once it's adjusted.

Video: how to measure your head circumference

In just over a minute, we show you how to measure your head with a tape measure or a piece of string. The video is in German.

In the example, the head circumference is 54 cm. For the helmet shown, that means size M with 52 to 58 cm. On other models, M often covers a different range. So always compare your measurement with the size range on the product page.

How to measure your head circumference

You need a flexible tape measure. Stand in front of a mirror or ask someone to help, so the tape stays level all the way round.

  1. Place the tape around the widest part of your head, about two finger widths (around 2.5 cm) above your eyebrows and just above your ears.
  2. Run it level around the back of your head. The tape should sit snugly without pulling.
  3. Read the value in centimetres and measure a second time. If the results differ, measure a third time in the same position.

No tape measure to hand? Use a piece of string that doesn't stretch. Mark the point where the ends meet and measure the length with a ruler or folding rule. Write the value down.

Sizes of current KED helmets compared

Size M isn't the same on every helmet. The table shows the size ranges of selected KED models as listed on their product pages. You'll also see that ranges can overlap within one model.

Use the table as a guide. The size range on the product page of your chosen helmet is what counts.

When your measurement fits two sizes

On many models, the size ranges overlap. With a head circumference of 52 cm, for example, both SM (49 to 53 cm) and M (52 to 58 cm) of the Meggy II Trend would work.

If your measurement falls into such an overlap, the larger size is usually the better choice. That's also what we show in the video. You then tighten the helmet with the adjustment system. Afterwards it has to sit centred and level, must not press anywhere and shouldn't move when you gently shake your head.

Also read the note on the product page. The Pedalon page, for example, says that it tends to run small. If you can, try on both sizes.

Finding the right bike helmet size for kids

For children too, the measured head circumference is what counts. Age alone tells you little, because two children of the same age often need different sizes. So measure just as carefully as you would for yourself.

Buy a helmet that fits today. A helmet that is too big to grow into can shift on the head, and the adjustment system can't make up for that. Once the helmet no longer sits comfortably and securely, measure again and choose the next size.

How to check the fit after adjusting

Put the helmet on centred and level, without tilting it backwards. It should sit evenly and comfortably firm all the way round.

  • Set the adjustment system so the helmet sits without pressure points.
  • Close the chin strap. It should sit snugly without pinching.
  • Gently shake your head. The helmet stays in place.

Does the helmet slip, press in one spot or only stay put with the adjustment system fully tightened? Then a different size or a different model will probably suit you better. If you wear a hat under your helmet in winter, check the fit with the hat on as well.

Common mistakes when choosing a size

  • Buying by S, M or L only: Always compare the centimetre range of the specific model.
  • Using an old measurement: Measure again before you buy a helmet and write the value down.
  • Buying a kids' helmet to grow into: Choose the size that fits today.
  • Making up for a shell that is too big with the adjustment system: The adjustment system is for fine tuning within the size range.

How do I measure my head without a tape measure?

Take a piece of string that doesn't stretch and place it level around the widest part of your head, about two finger widths above your eyebrows. Mark the point where the ends meet and measure the length with a ruler or folding rule.

Which bike helmet size fits a head circumference of 56 or 57 cm?

That depends on the model. On the Spiri II Trend, 56 and 57 cm fall into both M (52 to 58 cm) and L (55 to 61 cm). On the Pedalon, 56 cm fits S and M, while 57 cm fits M only. So always compare your measurement with the centimetre range of the model you want.

What should I do if I'm between two sizes?

If your measurement falls into the overlap of two sizes, the larger size is usually the better choice. You then tighten it with the adjustment system. Also check the note on the product page and make sure the helmet then sits level, securely and without pressure points.

How do I find the right bike helmet size for children?

Measure your child's head circumference and compare it with the centimetre range of the kids' helmet. Age alone isn't enough to choose a size. Buy a helmet that fits today and measure again as soon as it no longer sits comfortably.

How tight should a bike helmet be?

The helmet sits comfortably firm, centred and level on your head. It must not press anywhere and shouldn't move when you gently shake your head.

How do I adjust the straps correctly?

Close the chin strap and adjust it so it sits snugly without pinching. Then check again that the helmet sits centred, level and securely.

Can I wear a hat under my bike helmet?

A thick hat changes the fit. So check the fit with the headwear you wear when riding, and then adjust the helmet to match.

Why do bike helmet sizes differ between models?

Each model has its own shape, so a size range only ever applies to that model. On the Meggy Spark, for example, M covers 50 to 55 cm, on the Crom 52 to 58 cm.
