KED bike helmets: development and quality since 1985

KED Ahead is the only helmet manufacturer to produce a large share of its helmets in Germany. In our plant in Freiberg am Neckar we build bike helmets that combine the highest safety standards with innovative engineering. Every helmet goes through strict quality controls to CE standards and is tested by TÜV, a level of perfectionism you can rely on.

Expert tip: a good bike helmet can reduce serious head injuries by up to 69% and fatal head injuries by as much as 65%. Investing in your safety is definitely worth it!

Bike helmet range by age and area of use

With over 40 different models we offer the right protection for every cyclist. From colourful children's helmets through aerodynamic road helmets to sturdy MTB helmets, our range covers every area of use. Prices span everything from affordable entry level models to high end helmets with Mips and BOA.

Use our practical filter options:
By category: city, mountain bike, road, e-bike, children, adults
By size: XS (51-55cm) to XL (61-65cm)
By features: MIPS system, visor, LED lighting
By price: budget, mid range, premium

Children's bike helmets for babies, children and teenagers

Children need special protection, which is why we develop our children's bike helmets with extra features. The size range from 44 cm (XS) to 58 cm (M) covers every age group, from balance bike beginners to teenagers. Colourful designs with cool motifs make sure kids like wearing their helmets. Reflectors and optional LED lights add further visibility in traffic.

Our most popular children's helmet for your little ones:

  • Meggy: the classic with 360° reflectors, LED rear light & numerous designs

Bike helmets with MIPS for different areas of use

Mips technology (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) is the game changer when it comes to safety. In an oblique impact the inner helmet shell can shift minimally and so reduce dangerous rotational forces. Studies show that Mips helmets can reduce rotational acceleration by 22%.

Expert tip: MIPS is especially worthwhile for mountain bikers and e-bike riders, because the risk of oblique impacts is higher here.

E-bike and pedelec helmets with NTA 8776

On an e-bike you easily reach 25 km/h and more, and that calls for specific protection. Our pedelec helmets meet the stricter NTA 8776 standard for speed pedelecs and offer extended head coverage at the temples and the back of the head. The extra padding and reinforced helmet shells are optimally matched to the higher speeds.

Top features of our e-bike helmets:

• Extended protection zone at the back of the head
• Integrated LED rear lights
• Compatible with bike computers
• Extra ventilation against overheating

Determining bike helmet size: how to measure your head circumference

The best helmet is no use if it does not fit correctly. Current tests show massive differences in protective effect, not between expensive and cheap helmets, but between well fitting and poorly fitting ones. That is why choosing the right size is crucial.

How to find your perfect helmet size in 3 steps:

Step 1: measure your head circumference: take a flexible tape measure and place it about two finger widths above your eyebrows. Run it above the ears around your head, where your head has the largest circumference.

Step 2: choose the right size: sizes vary from helmet to helmet. Pick out your favourite helmet and check which size matches the head circumference you measured.

Step 3: fine tuning with the adjustment system Our helmets come with the IAS system (Individual Adapting System) with an adjustment dial. It lets you fit the helmet to your head to the millimetre. The chin strap should sit firmly but not cut in, with room for one finger between the strap and your chin.

Expert tip: between two sizes? Take the larger one and use the adjustment system. A helmet that is too tight causes headaches, one that is too loose does not protect optimally.

Bike helmet technologies, standards and features

Modern bike helmets are high tech products. At KED we rely on the proven in-mould process, in which the outer shell and the EPS core are fused under heat and pressure. The result: extremely stable yet feather light helmets with optimal force distribution in an impact.

Our core technologies at a glance:

In-mould construction: the outer shell and the foam core are produced as one piece, which makes the helmet light and stable at the same time.

Ventilation systems: up to 24 strategically placed air channels deliver optimal aerodynamics and cooling. Particularly important when riding hard!

Safety certifications: all KED helmets meet the EN 1078 standard, and our e-bike helmets additionally meet the stricter NTA 8776. That means tested safety to European standards.

Test winning quality: regular top rankings at ADAC and Stiftung Warentest confirm our quality. The Meggy has already been named best children's helmet several times.

Shocking but sadly true: only around 10% of German cyclists currently wear a helmet. Yet the figures clearly show the benefit, so be smarter than the majority!

Caring for your bike helmet and replacing it in time

A bike helmet is not a product for eternity, but with the right care it lasts a long time. The EPS foam inside ages through UV radiation and temperature swings. After 3-5 years you should replace your helmet, even if it still looks good on the outside.

When you need a new helmet immediately:

  • After every crash, even if no damage is visible
  • If there are visible cracks in the shell or the foam
  • If the adjustment system no longer works
  • If the straps are faded or brittle

You will find more information and tips on replacing your helmet here.

Care tips for a long service life:

  • Clean only with mild soapy water, no solvents!
  • Wash the pads regularly (usually removable)
  • Do not leave the helmet in the car (heat damages the material)
  • Store it dry and dark
  • Use a transport bag

Which bicycle helmet suits my intended use?

For everyday use and commuting a rear light or visor can be practical, for road and gravel rather ventilation and low weight, for MTB coverage and a possible visor as well. Go by your route, riding style and the product details.

What is the difference between bicycle helmets for children, women and men?

The labels mainly help with sizes, designs and product selection. What remains decisive is your individual head shape: a helmet has to be within the stated size range, sit stably and cause no pressure points.

Do I need different bicycle helmets for city, touring and sport?

Not necessarily. One model can suit several uses if its shape and features cover your requirements. If you often switch between everyday riding, touring and sport, compare ventilation, visibility and comfort together.

Do all KED bicycle helmets have a rear light, visor or Mips?

No. A rear light, visor, Mips and other functions depend on the model. Mips can reduce rotational movements in certain angled impact scenarios. Which specification is present is stated on the relevant product page.

How do I compare KED bicycle helmets sensibly?

Filter first by intended use and size. Then compare weight, ventilation, fit system and the extras you want. That narrows the choice by concrete requirements rather than by colour or shape alone.

Can I wear a bicycle helmet with glasses or a hat?

The temples of your glasses should work with the helmet rim and the fit system without pressure points. A thick hat can change the fit; if needed use a thin under cap and then check the position and the straps.

How do I find the right size for a bicycle helmet?

Measure the head circumference at the widest point of the head, about two fingers above the eyebrows. Compare the measurement with the model's size range. The helmet should sit level, firmly and free of pressure, and must not shift with the chin strap closed.

How do I clean and care for a bicycle helmet?

Clean the shell, straps and padding according to the model's care instructions. As a rule, lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth are enough. Avoid solvents, aggressive cleaners and strong heat.

When should a bicycle helmet be replaced after a crash?

If the helmet has taken an impact in a crash, it should not be used any further. Damage to the material structure is not always visible. Also follow the notes in the user manual.
