Bike helmet size: how to measure and find the right fit

To find the right helmet size, you need your head circumference in centimetres. Here we show you how to measure correctly and how to compare the result with the size of the helmet you want. After that, you check whether the helmet fits well once it's adjusted.

Video: how to measure your head circumference

In just over a minute, we show you how to measure your head with a tape measure or a piece of string. The video is in German.

In the example, the head circumference is 54 cm. For the helmet shown, that means size M with 52 to 58 cm. On other models, M often covers a different range. So always compare your measurement with the size range on the product page.

Sizes of current KED helmets compared

Size M isn't the same on every helmet. The table shows the size ranges of selected KED models as listed on their product pages. You'll also see that ranges can overlap within one model.

Use the table as a guide. The size range on the product page of your chosen helmet is what counts.

How do I measure my head without a tape measure?

Take a piece of string that doesn't stretch and place it level around the widest part of your head, about two finger widths above your eyebrows. Mark the point where the ends meet and measure the length with a ruler or folding rule.

Which bike helmet size fits a head circumference of 56 or 57 cm?

That depends on the model. On the Spiri II Trend, 56 and 57 cm fall into both M (52 to 58 cm) and L (55 to 61 cm). On the Pedalon, 56 cm fits S and M, while 57 cm fits M only. So always compare your measurement with the centimetre range of the model you want.

What should I do if I'm between two sizes?

If your measurement falls into the overlap of two sizes, the larger size is usually the better choice. You then tighten it with the adjustment system. Also check the note on the product page and make sure the helmet then sits level, securely and without pressure points.

How do I find the right bike helmet size for children?

Measure your child's head circumference and compare it with the centimetre range of the kids' helmet. Age alone isn't enough to choose a size. Buy a helmet that fits today and measure again as soon as it no longer sits comfortably.

How tight should a bike helmet be?

The helmet sits comfortably firm, centred and level on your head. It must not press anywhere and shouldn't move when you gently shake your head.

How do I adjust the straps correctly?

Close the chin strap and adjust it so it sits snugly without pinching. Then check again that the helmet sits centred, level and securely.

Can I wear a hat under my bike helmet?

A thick hat changes the fit. So check the fit with the headwear you wear when riding, and then adjust the helmet to match.

Why do bike helmet sizes differ between models?

Each model has its own shape, so a size range only ever applies to that model. On the Meggy Spark, for example, M covers 50 to 55 cm, on the Crom 52 to 58 cm.
