An off-road helmet differs fundamentally from a normal bike helmet. While city helmets focus primarily on visibility and everyday usability, off-road you have to reckon with entirely different forces. When mountain biking, your helmet should protect the back of the head and the temples in particular.

The difference between an MTB helmet and a gravel helmet lies mainly in the intended use: a mountain bike helmet offers extended protection for technical singletrack and enduro racing, while a gravel helmet finds the balance between aerodynamics and protection for mixed terrain. How do you care for an MTB or gravel helmet?

After every muddy ride, clean your helmet with lukewarm water and mild soap. On most models the helmet pads can be removed and washed easily. Store your helmet in a cool, dry place, as direct sunlight causes UV damage to the material.

We recommend replacing your helmet every 3-5 years. After a crash, immediate replacement is a must, even if there is no visible damage.

Expert tip: mark the purchase date inside the helmet with a waterproof pen. That way you keep track of its service life.
